The municipality was looking for a biomass separation solution to handle summer algae blooms in their lagoon as well as to reduce the overall Total Phosphorus (TP). A DAF was demonstrated to be highly effective in removing the algae and TP during trials. Two parallel DAF units were installed with Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR) for chemical dosing to accommodate the wide-ranging daily flow.
FRC chose a high rate DAF model with a low hydraulic surface loading rate (<1 gpm/ft2) as the approach to remove algae and TP. The FRC DAF floats the algae easily and it is skimmed off the top with our rotating top skimmer system. This design allows the TP entrained in the algae to be efficiently removed at the same time.
